Action Plan 3: Outreach Support - ADS

The Action Plan for the Outreach Support Project aims to establish and trial an outreach program for General Practitioners (GPs) and Pharmacists across the state of Tasmania to support the management of patients with addiction issues relating to the re-scheduling of over-the-counter (OTC) codeine. The program support for GPs and Pharmasists focusing on members of the community who have addiction issues relating to use of OTC codeine (for pain relief, and coughs and colds). This project will engage with the Tasmanian Health Service's Alcohol and Drug Service (ADS) and GPs and Pharmacists across the state.

Outcomes:

  • Improved collaboration between GPs, Pharmacists and ADS.
  • Early identification of patients with OTC codeine addiction issues.
  • Safe and effective support for GPs and Pharmacists to manage patient addiction issues relating to the use of OTC codeine.
  • More OST prescribers and dispensers in Tasmania
  • Increased capacity in primary care for the management of opioid addiction and the judicious use of prescribed opioids and other high risk low value affect modulating medicines.
  • Develop an understanding of the strategic purchasing decisions that provide for the delivery of best practice addiction services in Tasmania.
