Secondary Triage

When you call 000, we use a process called ‘secondary triage’. It ensures that you get:

• the right care
• in the right place
• at the right time.

How secondary triage works

• We assess your 000 call.
• If you need an ambulance, we will send one.
• If you do not need an ambulance immediately, we will connect you to a medical person.
• This will be a specially trained paramedic or registered nurse.
• During this call, we will ask you the same questions as if they were there in person.
• They may still send an ambulance to you.
• Or they may provide you with an alternative care option.
• This may be a doctor, pharmacist or another medical professional.
