
Applying for a new licence or amending a current radiation licence
Apply for a new licence
To apply for a new licence to possess, acquire, use, store, transport, install, service and maintain radiation sources, you should:
- check with the supplier that the radiation apparatus or radioactive material complies with the relevant safety standard
- check that the person(s) you wish to add to your licence have the necessary training and qualifications to use the intended radiation source(s)
- new licence application forms
- for a new premises, complete the application for registration of place RPA0101
- a certificate of compliance for premises from an accredited person must be provided at a later date to ensure the place is safe to occupy and complies with relevant standards

Amend a current licence to include people and sources
To add people or radiation sources to your existing licence:
- check with the supplier that the unit you wish to add complies with the relevant safety standard
- check that the person you wish to add to your licence has the necessary training and qualifications to use the intended radiation source(s)
- complete and submit an application for amendment.

Change of Circumstances
If the names of any partners and directors, or phone numbers, emails and business details have changed, you must notify the Radiation Protection Unit by submitting an Notify Change of Circumstances form or email the changes to the Radiation Protection Unit. There is no fee for this application.
Automatic Mutual Recognition (AMR)
The current Automatic Mutual Recognition (AMR) policy came into effect on 1 July 2022. AMR has been designed so a person can work for short periods in a second jurisdiction using their equivalent (home jurisdiction) interstate licence.
Prior to commencement of your work, you must provide the following:
- Notification form to work in Tasmania under Automatic Mutual Recognition
- Equivalent interstate radiation licence (the above form includes an option to upload your licence)
Jurisdictions that are currently participating in the Automatic Mutual Recognition for the purpose of radiation licensing are:
- Australian Capital Territory
- New South Wales
- Northern Territory
- South Australia
- Tasmania
- Victoria
- Western Australia

Licence Application forms
RPA0001 is an application for a new licence to deal with X-ray apparatus. The application can accommodate the licence holder details and one person and one X-ray unit. To include more people or X-ray units with the application for licence use the RPA0001 ‘Additional’ forms as needed.
RPA0002 is an application for a new licence to deal with laser, IPL or MRI. The application can accommodate the licence holder details and one person and one item. To include more people or items with the application for licence use the RPA0002 ‘Additional’ forms as needed.
RPA0003 is an application for a new licence to deal with radioactive material. The application can accommodate the licence holder details, one person and one radioactive material. To include more people or radioactive material with the application for licence use the RPA0003 ‘Additional’ forms as needed.
RPA0004 Addition is an application to amend a licence to deal with an X-ray unit. The application can accommodate the licence holder details and apply to add one person and/or one X-ray unit to the licence.
If you want to add more than one apparatus and/or person, you must complete a separate application for amendment for each apparatus and person.
RPA0004 Deletion is an application to amend a licence to deal with an X-ray unit. The application can accommodate the licence holder details and apply to remove one person and/or one X-ray unit.
If you want to remove or delete more than one apparatus and person, you must complete a separate application for amendment for each apparatus and person.
RPA0005 Addition is an application to amend a licence to deal with a laser, IPL or MRI unit. The application can accommodate the licence holder details and apply to add one person and/or one laser, IPL or MRI unit to the licence.
If you want to add more than one apparatus and person, you must complete a separate application for amendment for each apparatus and person.
RPA0005 Deletion is an application to amend a licence to deal with a laser, IPL or MRI unit. The application can accommodate the licence holder details and apply to remove one person and/or one laser, IPL or MRI.
If you want to remove or delete more than one apparatus and person, you must complete separate application for amendment for each apparatus and person
RPA0006 Addition is an application to amend a licence to deal with radioactive material. The application can accommodate the licence holder details and apply to add one person and/or one radioactive material to the licence.
If you want to add more than one source and person, you must complete separate application for amendment for each apparatus and person.
RPA0006 Deletion is an application to amend a licence to deal with radioactive material. The application can accommodate the licence holder details, and apply to remove one person and/or one radioactive material.
If you want to remove or delete more than one source and person, you must complete separate application for amendment for each apparatus and person
RPA0010 Change is to be used when notifying there has been a change in contact details, business (trading name only), change in partners or partnership or a change in Directors for company licences.
The Radiation Protection Act 2005 does not allow licences to be transferred. Therefore, in the case of a company or business being sold, the new owner will need to apply for a new licence.
RPA0015 is an application for a new licence to transport radioactive material. The application can accommodate the licence holder details and one person and all transport categories for radioactive material. Applying for a licence when you already hold an equivalent licence in another Australian jurisdiction or New Zealand. Download the appropriate licence application form and submit it with a completed statutory declaration form.
Registration application forms
The place in which you wish to carry out your radiation practice must also comply with relevant radiation safety standards and, to show this, the place must have a certificate of compliance issued by an accredited person.
When a place has been issued with a certificate of compliance by an accredited person an application to register the place may be submitted using the RPA0101 application form.
