The Tasmanian Nursing and Midwifery Scholarships help fund post registration education, training, and professional development that enables nurses and midwives to build their clinical expertise in their chosen area. They also help to attract and retain valued nurses and midwives in Tasmania.
Applications for the 2023 Scholarship round have now closed.
About the Scholarships
The Tasmanian Department of Health, through the Office of the Chief Nurse and Midwifery Officer (OCNMO), offer financial assistance via the scholarship program to Tasmanian nurses and midwives undertaking post registration study.
The Office of the Chief Nurse and Midwifery Officer value excellence in nursing and midwifery care. Competent and educated nurses and midwives, who value lifelong learning, are key to providing safe and quality care to the Tasmanian community.
The 2023 scholarships will be awarded based on current and projected workforce requirements and areas of high clinical need. Applications from other specialties are invited and will be considered.
Priority areas for 2023 include but are not limited to:
- Aged Care
- Child and Family Health
- Emergency
- General Medicine
- Infection Prevention and Control
- Intensive Care
- Mental Health
- Midwifery
- Primary Health
- Public Health
Future scholarship rounds will be determined by workforce priorities, funding availability and stakeholder feedback.
Scholarship Guidelines
Before applying, please read the Scholarship Guidelines. This is important to ensure you understand the eligibility criteria, funding, and terms and conditions.
To be eligible applicants must:
- hold Australian citizenship or permanent residency
- be registered as an enrolled nurse, registered nurse, or registered midwife with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA)
- be working as a nurse or midwife in Tasmania
- be studying or accepted into an accredited higher education provider, vocational education and training, or professional college/association course
- provide official evidence of course enrolment as outlined on the application form
- declare if funding from another source has been, or will be received for the program of study
- declare if utilising the University of Tasmania partnership pricing
- use the scholarship funds for post registration nursing or midwifery study tuition fees between 1 January 2023 – 31 December 2023
- complete and submit the online application form by the closing date
- accept the scholarship terms and conditions through a signed agreement.
Scholarships are not provided for:
- research projects
- time away from work to study
- travel costs
- professional national or international study tours
- courses fully funded through partnership pricing with the University of Tasmania
- conferences
Applications may be excluded when an application:
- is not submitted using the online application portal
- is incomplete or missing documents
- does not meet the eligibility criteria
- is submitted after the closing date.
Important factors in determining scholarship value.
- Tuition fees for post registration nursing and midwifery studies will be reimbursed up to the maximum value defined in the funding scale (Refer: Table 1).
- The study load will determine the scholarship value that may be awarded. Part time study will receive a pro rata scholarship payment (up to the maximum value).
- Applicants studying higher education courses subsidised through partnership agreements with the University of Tasmania will be reimbursed up to the value of the Partnership Price Student Fee (ie: not the value of the full course/unit fee).
- Student Services and Amenities Fees (SSAF) will not be reimbursed.
- The funding cycle is for 2023 calendar year. Applicants seeking ongoing funding for courses extending beyond 2023 are encouraged to reapply for subsequent scholarship cycles
- If an applicant has received scholarship funding in a previous Tasmanian Nursing and Midwifery Scholarships cycle, they are eligible only for the difference between the amount already paid and the maximum eligibility value. Please see Frequently Asked Questions for further information.

Successful applicants will receive a single payment per scholarship round. The value awarded will be paid as per the scholarship funding scale (Table 1.) and enrolment evidence. Examples are provided in the Frequently Asked Questions.
The scholarship value allocated to a successful applicant will not be greater than the actual cost of enrolment*.
*Actual cost of enrolment = the fee charged to applicant by education/training provider, further information available in the Frequently Asked Questions

Applications can only be submitted online.
Applications for the 2023 round open on 30 January 2023 and close 11.59pm 15 March 2023
Scholarships are competitive and submission of an application does not guarantee funding support. The scholarships are prioritised and distributed based on current and projected workforce needs.
Each application will be assessed against the scholarship eligibility criteria and supporting evidence. Applicants will be advised in writing via email of the outcome of their scholarship application in April 2023
All successful scholarship recipients will receive a scholarship agreement and payment form via email.
Recipients are required to complete the scholarship agreement and payment form via email to the Office of the Chief Nurse and Midwifery Officer by the due date specified in the letter of offer. Failure to do so without prior communication will result in funding not being paid.
If successful, recipients agree to:
- use the scholarship funds only for the purpose of post registration nursing or midwifery study
- accept the scholarship terms and conditions through a signed agreement
- provide relevant banking details for scholarship payment
- repay scholarship funding should the terms and conditions not be upheld
- be willing to participate in an outcome survey and/or telephone call.
Withholding tax will not be deducted.
We recommend scholarship recipients seek independent taxation and personal financial advice from their tax accountant or the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) before accepting a scholarship.
Any tax implications associated with the scholarships are the responsibility of the recipient.

Applications are assessed against the eligibility criteria, supporting documents/evidence of enrolment, course/unit fees. Funding is limited and areas of workforce need will be prioritised.
It is your responsibility to ensure you upload the correct documents and make any necessary adjustments prior to the scholarship round closing date.
Due to the competitive nature of the scholarships and large volume of applications, the Selection Panel are unable to follow up with applicants who have submitted incomplete applications.

The amount depends on the course, study load, scholarship funding scheme. Further information is available in the Scholarship Guidelines above.
If you are receiving other funding towards the same course, the total eligible amount may be reduced or withdrawn.
Please provide information in your application about other scholarships or funding that you are receiving. You may be contacted to seek further information regarding this.
If you received scholarship funding in 2022 you may be eligible for funding in 2023. Eligibility is dependent on the amount received in 2022, the maximum amount payable for your enrolled course, and your evidence of enrolment.

Scholarship funding will be provided before the end of the financial year. It may take up to six weeks for funds to be deposited in your bank account.
You can only use the scholarship funds for post registration nursing or midwifery tuition/course fees particular to study in the 2023 calendar year (1 January 2023 – 31 December 2023).
Scholarship funding cannot be used to purchase hardware such as laptops, iPads and desktop computers.
You must notify the Office of the Chief Nurse and Midwifery Officer within seven days of any changes to your enrolment.
Your application must provide evidence of enrolment into an accredited higher education provider, vocational education and training, or professional college/association course.
Withholding tax will not be deducted.
