Construction of the new helipad at the Launceston General Hospital (LGH) has reached a key milestone with the installation of the aerobridge linking the helipad to the hospital.
The new $15 million helipad will support our highly trained paramedics, emergency medicine specialists and nurses, and aeromedical contractor, Rotor-Lift Aviation, in the work they do every day to save lives.

The aerobridge will enable the rapid transit of patients to and from the helipad and medical services inside the hospital such as the Emergency Department, ICU and Operating Theatres.
The installation marks the completion of construction of the helideck structure which has been achieved through the collaboration of local businesses Vos Construction and Haywards steel fabrication.

Strong cooperation between these two firms during the assembly, delivery and installation phases of both the helideck sections and the aerobridge has delivered significant efficiencies for the project.
The new helipad is being built atop the hospital’s Cleveland St car park and will provide a vital piece of infrastructure for emergency aeromedical patient transport to and from the LGH.
Ensuring patients in need of critical and life-saving medical intervention can be transported safely and efficiently to the LGH is a vital part of Tasmania’s emergency medical response protocol.
The Department of Health has worked closely with Ambulance Tasmania, LGH clinical staff and Rotor-Lift Aviation to deliver the upgraded helipad, which is a part of the hospital’s masterplan.
