Daily visiting hours

Visits must be booked prior to attending the Wilfred Lopes Centre.

Visiting hours daily*:

9:00 am to 11:30 am

1:30 pm to 4:30 pm

*Visiting hours may change due to instruction from Public Health. You will be advised when you contact us to book if hours have changed.

Visitors need to contact the Centre to book a visit, either by:

First time visitors

You need to make an appointment at least one week prior to the visit, and please note:

  • Phone the Centre on the day of the visit to confirm the visit can go ahead.
  • You must request prior approval to bring items into the Centre on your visit.
  • Do not attend the Centre if you are under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

After your first visit, repeat visits then require at least 24 hours notice to arrange.

First visit

On your first visit you will need to provide identification (ID). You need to have

ONE of the following photo ID:

  • Current Australian Passport, or
  • Current Australian Drivers License, or
  • Current Australian Defence Force, Police, other Government Agency or Student ID with a recent photo.

If you do not have current ID with a recent photo you need to provide

TWO of the following:

  • Current Medicare Card
  • Current Credit Card or Bank statement
  • Current benefit card issued by the Australian Government
  • Birth Certificate
  • Vehicle registration papers
  • Marriage Certificate
  • Taxation Group Certificate or assessment notice
  • Certificate of Australian Citizenship
  • Education report (within last 6 months).

If you do not have enough identification the Security Staff will contact the Manager.

Privacy and your information

Any information collected for the purposes of identification is used only when you enter and leave the Centre.

You can make a request to the Manager to delete or amend your information at any time.

Entry process

Entry is through the Gatehouse.

When you arrive the security staff will guide you through the process of entry.

Please arrive 15 minutes prior to your appointment to allow time for the security process to be completed.

We have strict security measures in place to ensure the safety of everyone:

  • A scan of your hand is taken for biometric identification.
  • All bags and loose items will be passed through an x-ray machine, similar to airport security.
  • You may also be checked with a  hand-held metal detector.

Once security staff have cleared you for the visit they will contact the Centre.

You will be met at the entrance of the Centre by a staff member.

Your visit may be supervised.

Bringing items into the Centre

Request prior approval from the Manager to bring items into the Centre.

The Security staff will have a list of the items that have been approved.

Please enter the Centre with as few personal items as possible. We provide lockers to store essential personal items.

How to get to the Centre

Access to the Centre is off East Derwent Highway via the Risdon Prison driveway, or footpath from the bus stop if walking.

Follow the signs and turn right into the driveway to the Wilfred Lopes Centre.

The Metro bus services from/to:

  • Hobart - 695
  • Glenorchy - 694
  • Rosny Park/Bridgewater - 696

Buses stop on the East Derwent Highway, stop number 19 on each side of the highway.

Parking and Access

The Centre has free parking facilities for visitors

There is access to the unit for wheel chairs and people with limited mobility.
