Correctional Primary Health Service

The Correctional Health Service is part of the Tasmanian Health Service and provides general and primary healthcare to men and women who are inmates of the Tasmanian Prison Service.

More than 650 prisoners (June 2019) are accommodated within the Tasmanian prison system and have access to healthcare provided at each of the facilities by the Correctional Primary Health Service.

The Correctional Primary Health Service provides health services across Tasmania, working closely with the Department of Justice (Risdon Prison Complex and Adult Reception Centres) and Department of Communities Tasmania (Ashley Youth Detention Centre) as detailed below.

Risdon Prison Complex

This complex has a dedicated medical clinic, consulting rooms, pharmacy and a hospital with six (6) primary care beds. A hospital nursing service operates and will respond to medical emergencies within the Risdon Prison Complex.
The facility includes Maximum security, Minimum security for male inmates and the Mary Hutchinson Women's Prison.

Ron Barwick Men's Prison

This is a the minimum security facility within the Risdon Prison Complex. A health clinic operates in this facility and nursing staff are present 7 days per week.

Mary Hutchinson Women's Prison

This complex has a capacity of 45 beds including a maximum security section. A health clinic operates in this facility and nursing staff are present 7 days per week.

Hobart Remand Centre

This is the major reception prison for the southern region. A health clinic operates in this facility and nursing staff are present 7 days per week.

Launceston Reception Centre

This is the major reception prison for the north and north west regions. A health clinic operates in this facility and nursing staff are present 7 days per week.

What we do

Our health service provides general and specialist healthcare to men and women in prison. The service has health centres in each of the Tasmanian prison locations in Hobart and Launceston. In addition we provide a health service at Ashley Youth Detention Centre in Deloraine.

Our team

The Service is staffed by a team of Nurses and Doctors.

On entry inmates receive an initial health assessment by a Nurse. This helps to determine the type and level of healthcare that may be required in prison.

Services we provide

Access to services requires making an appointment via a health request form which is available to inmates in their Unit and on the computer system.

The services we provide include:

  • initial health assessment on entry to the prison system
  • management of active health problems including review of medications, treatment of existing conditions, drug and alcohol issues, mental health assessments.
  • preventative health programs, including sexual health education, drug and alcohol education, immunisation, lifestyle assessment and education.
  • provision of advice to the Prison Service on care for the frail, disabled or elderly in the prison environment.
  • inpatient care, including drug and alcohol detoxification and relapse prevention, preoperative and post-operative care, management of infections, injuries and other conditions requiring low/medium level healthcare.
  • medications and pharmacotherapy (S8) provision
  • outpatient allied health services referrals including forensic mental health, physiotherapy, dental and optometry.


The Correctional Health Services values our client's privacy. All treatment and discussions between prisoners and Health Nurses and Doctors, as well as contact with any other health professional, is confidential.

Clients can give consent to share information with a nominated person, such as a family member, this must be provided in writing.

There may be times when significant others or family members would like to contact us about an inmates health and wellbeing. Please note we will require consent before providing information about an inmate to a third party.
