Women's and Children's Services, Launceston General Hospital

The Department of Women's and Children's services consist of the Queen Victoria Maternity Unit, the Children's Ward (Ward 4K) and Gynaecology services.

The Queen Victoria Maternity Unit

Provides care for women within Northern Tasmania for pre-pregnancy counselling, pregnancy, birth and post natal care. Women can choose from a number of options including share care with their family doctor in conjunction with the antenatal clinic, midwives clinics and Team Midwifery.

A modern birthing unit provides for inpatient birthing facilities and the option of staying in hospital post natally or going home with midwifery support from the Extended Midwifery service.

Midwifery Group Practice provides midwifery care throughout pregnancy, birth and after the birth when you go home

The Unit also provides Neonatal care to babies from 30 weeks gestation and offers an Extended Neo-Natal service to facilitate the early discharge of premature babies through the 4N@home project.

The Maternity Information Package provides a guide to pregnancy, birth and early parenting, including options for care within the North and North West of Tasmania and contact  numbers.

The Children's Ward (Ward 4K)

Provides inpatient and outpatient paediatric care for children and young persons and an extended home visiting service.


Provided for both inpatient and outpatient services including:

  • consultation for women with gynaecological conditions
  • investigation, treatment and management of abnormal pap smear results
  • management and treatment for women with or suspected of gynaecological cancer.
