Information for Clients and their Families regarding equipment

As part pf the ongoing rollout of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), there will be changes to the way equipment is funded.

These changes will apply to all equipment services currently funded by the Tasmanian Health Service (THS) via TasEquip. This includes:

  • TasEquip (previously the Community Equipment Scheme)
  • TasEquip Equipment Library

The rollout to full scheme NDIS in Tasmania is a statewide age based approach. You can contact the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) on 1800 800 110 or go to NDIS website to find out more information on the NDIS and to determine when this may apply to you.

What these changes mean for you

By July 2019 all persons with a disability who currently use TasEquip funded equipment can apply to have an approved NDIS plan.

1. People who have an approved NDIS Plan

If you have an approved NDIS plan you will need to ensure that all equipment that you require is in your plan, this includes:

  • funds for any assessments required prior to purchasing equipment;
    • once a quote for the cost of the equipment is provided to the NDIA and accepted, the funds for equipment is included in your Plan
  • provision for any repairs or maintenance, should it be needed, on any of the equipment being used. This applies to all equipment even if it was originally provided by the NDIS or TasEquip

When checking your plan it is important to note that equipment is known as “assistive technology” (AT) under the NDIS.

As you replace your TasEquip Equipment with NDIS funded equipment please return your TasEquip equipment to TasEquip

Note:  You will continue to receive an invoice for the annual TasEquip loan fee until all TasEquip equipment is returned.

If you have any questions about the supports included in your approved NDIS plan you will need to contact the NDIA on 1800 800 110. If you have a support coordinator, they will be able to follow up with the NDIA on your behalf. Your Local Area Coordinator will also be able to assist you to implement your plan.

2. People who do not yet have an approved NDIS Plan

People who don’t yet have an approved NDIS plan and currently use TasEquip Equipment:

  • will not be disadvantaged by these changes
  • will be able to continue to use TasEquip equipment until their NDIS funded equipment is provided.

Until you have an approved NDIS plan all of the TasEquip services and responsibilities continue.

Note: From July 2019, all persons with a disability who don’t yet have an approved NDIS plan and who have not previously used equipment will need to contact NDIA directly to ask about the NDIS access and planning process.

To find out more information on when you are due to transition to the NDIS or on the access request process you can contact the NDIS either by telephone 1800 800 110 or the NDIS website

More information on the participant pathway can be found here

3. People requiring equipment for hospital discharge for a health related problem

People in this situation will still have access to equipment from TasEquip. TasEquip services and responsibilities will apply, including fees. Hospital based health professionals will assess and recommend equipment required.
