Oncology Social Worker

Oncology social workers provide counselling and other services which can reduce stress for patients and their family through all phases of their cancer.

How can they help?

  • Assist patients with coping with their diagnosis of cancer and the many emotions they may experience
  • Understand financial supports available
  • Link patients and families into community services

  • Individual counselling and support
  • Planning for discharge home from hospital
  • Residential care planning
  • Advocacy

What can they teach patients about?

  • Talking with their treatment team members
  • Talking with their children, family, friends or co-workers
  • Coping with their emotions — sadness, anger, worry and fears
  • Reducing stress and using relaxation skills
  • How cancer affects sex, intimacy, fertility, and feeling good about their body
  • Living with cancer, issues commonly experienced and resources to help long term
  • Advance care directives
  • Palliative care

Can help patients access

  • Transportation to and from medical care
  • Temporary accommodation during treatment
  • Referrals for support
