What is incontinence?

  • Incontinence describes the involuntary loss of urine or faeces. There are several types of incontinence and many different causes.
  • Bladder and bowel control problems are common. More than 4.8 million Australians of all ages are affected.
  • Although incontinence is widespread, it is not normal and for some can lead to fear, anger, shame, anxiety and social isolation.
  • Help is available and many incontinence problems can be treated, managed and cured.

Who can help me?

The Community Continence Service offers free help for people with bladder and bowel control problems. The clinical team includes nurses and physiotherapists with special interest and training in managing bladder and bowel control problems.

  • Information about individual treatment and management choices
  • Support throughout treatment
  • Education and information sessions

Where are services provided?

The Community Continence Service holds clinics at various Community Health Centres in Southern Tasmania and provides home visits.

How to make a booking?

You can access this service by:

  • self referral, telephone (03) 6166 5760
  • a friend of family member can contact on your behalf, with your consent or
  • a doctor or health care worker can contact us on your behalf, with your consent.

All referrals are triaged and appointments are prioritised based on clinical need.
