Licences under the Poisons Act

Licences, permits and authorities are required for a number of activities including:

  • manufacture of substances included in Schedule 2, 3, 4, 8 and some Schedule 7 substances
  • wholesale supply of Schedule 2, 3, 4, 8 and some Schedule 7 substances
  • cultivation of alkaloid poppies and industrial hemp
    possession of certain drugs by nurses in remote areas
  • sale of some Schedule 2 substances through country stores which are more than 10 km from a pharmacy
  • possession of schedule 2, 3, and 4 for industrial, educational, advisory and research purposes
  • prescribing of Schedule 8 psychostimulants
  • possession of more than 5g of diazepam
  • prescribing and supply of clozapine
  • prescribing of clomiphene, retinoids, thalidomide etc
  • possession or use of certain Schedule 7 substances
  • possession of phenylacetic acid
  • exemptions from packaging and labelling standards
  • possession of approved first aid kits
  • prescribing of methadone for opioid maintenance
  • prescribing narcotic analgesics for more than two months
  • prescribing for opioid dependent patients
