Adult Inpatient Haematology Oncology (Medical) services

Patients may need to stay overnight in hospital because some cancer treatments may take a long time to administer or closer observation is needed. Sometimes patients may need to stay in hospital for support of treatment side effects or other reasons.

Royal Hobart Hospital Oncology and Haematology Inpatient Unit

The Royal Hobart Hospital has a 21 bed Haematology Oncology inpatient unit (9A) which specialises in the care of patients with cancer or blood disorder. Sometimes patients that don’t have cancer will also come to 9A if beds are not available on other wards.

Doctors, nurses, allied health staff, administration staff and volunteers are part of the 9A inpatient Haematology Oncology team. They care for patients while they are in hospital and help make plans for when patients are ready to leave hospital.

The Palliative Care Service works closely with the 9A Haematology Oncology team. The Palliative Care team can help patients in pain and with other symptoms.

Families are important when a patient is on 9A. Family members may be part of patient consent, care plans and discharge planning.
