Haematology Oncology Outpatient Clinics
The Haematology Oncology Outpatient Clinic is where you will see a specialist doctor call a Medical Oncologist or Clinical Haematologist. To see a Medical Oncologist or Clinical Haematologist a referral is needed. This will often be done by your General Practitioner (GP)

Are not doctors or nurses but are important members of your cancer treatment team. Examples of Allied Health Professionals include; Dietitians, Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, Psychologists, Social Workers, Pharmacists and Speech Pathologists
Cancer Care Coordinators
Registered nurses who have experience in cancer that can help support patients, their families and support people.
What does a Cancer Care Coordinator do?
Every diagnosis comes with a lot to think about. You may have questions that need answers, tests to schedule, treatments to consider, concerns about family members or uncertainty about how the medical system works.
The Cancer Care Coordinators can support and guide you throughout your care.
They can assist you and your family to navigate your cancer journey with a full understanding of the support available.
The Care Coordinators work closely with your doctors and others involved in your care to link all services together.
How do Cancer Coordinators help?
We can assist in connecting people living with cancer with the right person at the right time.
We provide appropriate support and access to many services by:
- Providing a point of contact and support for you and your family.
- Providing you with reliable information about your diagnosis and treatment plan.
- Providing you with information around dealing with the effects of treatment.
- Coordinating your care - wherever you are in your cancer journey.
- Assisting with access to services in the hospital and your community before, during and after treatment.
How to contact Cancer Coordinators
Ask one of your treating team to put you in touch with a Cancer Care Coordinator.
You can access this free service at any point and you do not need a medical referral.

Royal Hobart Hospital Haematology Oncology Day Unit
The Haematology Oncology Day unit (8A) is open seven days a week from 7:30am-5:30 pm weekdays and 7.30am-4.30 pm on weekends and public holidays. This unit treats people with cancer or a blood disorder. The unit also provides some treatments for patients who do not have cancer.
The unit has comfortable recliner chairs with privacy curtains and televisions. There are two beds in private rooms that are used for longer day treatments.
Doctors, nurses, pharmacists, allied health, administration staff and volunteers make up the Haematology Oncology Day unit health care team.
Patients come to the unit for chemotherapy, immunotherapy and targeted therapies. Patients also come to the unit for blood transfusions, antibiotics through a drip, iron infusions, immunoglobulins, venesections and bone marrow aspiration.
The Haematology Oncology Day unit works with the Bone Marrow Transplant service by providing plasmapheresis, white blood cell depletions, peripheral blood stem cell collections and bone marrow/stem cell reinfusions.
