A review into cardiac catheterisation lab capacity across Tasmania undertaken by Associate Professor Andrew MacIsaac, the Director of Cardiology at St Vincent’s Hospital in Melbourne, has been completed.
The review identified a number of recommendations to enhance the delivery of cardiac care right across Tasmania and optimise care and outcomes for patients in Tasmania.
Importantly, a number of actions identified in the recommendations are already underway, such as the $120 million Northern Heart Centre that will act as the primary cardiology referral centre in the State’s North and deliver a second catheterisation lab.
It will also include the establishment of a dedicated cardiology ward featuring a cardiac day unit and expanded echo, stress testing and outpatient capacity at the Launceston General Hospital.
Following the completion of the review, the Department of Health is continuing its work on developing a Statewide Cardiac Strategy which will include an implementation plan for the recommended changes and improvements, including infrastructure, patient flow and service delivery, and resourcing.
The Statewide Cardiac Strategy will focus on the delivery of cardiac care in Tasmania for the next 10 years. This strategy is being led by the Tasmanian Cardiac Network, with public consultation expected to commence in the coming months.
While the full report cannot be released publicly due to a number of commercial in confidence matters, a summary report that includes the most valuable and relevant information from the review is available.
