Concept designs have been released today for the new, purpose-built Northern Mental Health Precinct, which will be built at 52 Frankland Street, Launceston.
The Tasmanian Government is investing $90 million to develop the dedicated mental health facility as part of the broader Launceston General Hospital Precinct Masterplan.
The Northern Mental Health Precinct will deliver a comprehensive range of acute and community-based mental health services to provide immediate support, brief interventions, education, and assistance for Tasmanians in a contemporary, home-like environment.
The design includes welcoming a Safe Haven, Recovery College, consulting rooms and a 5-bed Short Stay Unit on the lower floors. A 30-bed dedicated urgent care inpatient ward will be built across two upper floors, allowing a step-up, step-down approach under the one roof.
The proposed building features a pitched roof to complement the surrounding area, landscaped external spaces, and the established oak trees towards the back of the site which are retained in the design.
The project will include a link-bridge to connect the new Mental Health Precinct with the LGH.
Parking with easy access to the building is included, and the design will provide improved vehicle and pedestrian access to and from the site.
Over the coming weeks, the Department will engage with key stakeholders, including our dedicated staff and the wider community, about the concept design and next steps.
The community can find out more and provide comment about the concept design at two community drop-in displays held at the LGH:
- Thursday, 14 November 2024, between 3:30pm – 6:30pm
- Saturday, 16 November 2024, between 9:00am – 12:00pm
Once the detailed design is finalised a Development Application for the Northern Mental Health Precinct will be lodged with City of Launceston.
Tenders for construction are expected to be invited in mid-2025 and subject to achieving the necessary approvals, construction is expected to begin in October-2025.
