Third coronavirus case confirmed - 12 March 2020

12 March 2020

Dr Mark Veitch, Director of Public Health

A woman in her 30s has tested positive for coronavirus in Tasmania.

She is currently in a stable condition in the Royal Hobart Hospital.

It is Tasmania’s third confirmed case of coronavirus. The other two cases remain in medical care and are stable. This latest case is not related to either of the previous cases and is not due to local transmission in Tasmania.

The woman travelled to Australia from South America via New Zealand and arrived in Hobart on Sunday 8 March from Sydney aboard Jetstar flight JQ727 which landed about 10.20pm.

Public Health Services has received a manifest from the airline and has commenced contacting people who were seated in close contact to the woman as a priority. These people were seated in rows 13 to 17, inclusive. These close contacts will be required to self-quarantine for 14 days and will receive daily follow-up from PHS staff.

All other passengers on the flight are casual contacts and will be contacted and informed that they should contact the Public Health Hotline on 1800 671 738 should they feel unwell.

The woman also informed PHS that she visited UTAS’ Sandy Bay Campus on Monday 9 March and Tuesday 10 March. She was at the Morris Miller library between 9.30am to 5.30pm on Monday, and between 8.30am and 12.30pm on Tuesday when she also briefly visited Lazenby’s café.

While the risk to any other member of the public who was at these venues at the same time is very low, anyone who was at these venues at the above times who is feeling unwell in the 14 days after they were there should contact the Public Health Hotline on 1800 671 738.

The woman was tested late on Tuesday 10 March and has been in self-quarantine since.

PHS thanks the woman for her cooperation in helping to trace her potential contacts. Information such as this is critical in limiting the spread of coronavirus in our community as it allows us to inform the public quickly and identify possible contacts.
