Health Star Rating

The Health Star Rating system is an initiative of the Australian, state and territory governments in partnership with industry, public health and consumer groups.

The Health Star Rating system is:

• A quick and easy way to compare similar packaged foods (for example, foods side by side on the supermarket shelf such as breakfast cereals or yoghurts or frozen meals). For example, a breakfast cereal with 5 stars is a healthier choice than one with 2 stars.
• Only one tool to help consumers make a healthier choice. It is not intended for fresh unpackaged foods like fruit and vegetables. These foods are recommended to be a main part of eating as outlined in the Australian Dietary Guidelines.
• Not designed to give information on quantity (for example, how much food to eat). This information can be found in the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating.
