About the project
The Department of Health has released the new Tasmanian Suicide Prevention Strategy 2023-2027 setting out the vision and priorities for preventing suicide in Tasmania for the next five years. This is the third suicide prevention strategy and aligns with the national policy agenda and our broader work under Rethink 2020, Tasmania’s strategic mental health plan.
Importantly, this is the first suicide prevention strategy to include a foreword and statements from people with lived experience. We have drawn on the Tasmanian community experience and expertise to develop a strategy that is relevant and meets community needs and expectations.
Implementation Plans will be developed to support the strategy, with the first planned for release in early 2023.
Project updates and milestones
The Tasmanian Suicide Prevention Strategy 2023-2027 was released on 9 December 2022 setting out Tasmania’s suicide prevention vision and priorities for the next five years.
The draft of the third Tasmanian Suicide Prevention Strategy was released on 26 September 2022. The Department of Health, Tasmania, is now seeking feedback from the Tasmanian community on this draft. Community feedback will inform the development of the final strategy. We welcome written submissions from individuals or organisations and have some questions to help guide responses. Please provide any feedback to [email protected] by 11:59pm on Monday 10 October 2022.
If you need help completing or sending a submission, please contact the Mental Health, Alcohol and Drug Directorate at:

On 15 August 2022 we launched an online community survey for young people to help us create the new Tasmanian Suicide Prevention Strategy. The survey will give young Tasmanians (aged 12-25) a say in what we should do about youth suicide and distress in our State. The survey is also open to parents/carers and anyone working with young people in Tasmania who would like to share their views on how we can best support young people. Doing the survey will let young people and their families and friends help shape a five-year vision for reducing rates of youth suicide and distress in Tasmania.

The Tasmanian Suicide Prevention Strategy Community Survey was launched on 17 June 2022 to learn more about the views and experiences of the Tasmanian community. The survey provides an opportunity for all people living in Tasmania to have a say and help shape a five-year vision for preventing suicide in our State.
