Applications submitted other than online, or incomplete, will not be accepted.
Our online application form ensures all the information required to assess your application is provided. The form includes information on your eligibility to work in Australia.
Only one application is required; you will be asked to indicate your preferred place of employment (Hobart, Launceston, North West Region) via the application form. Applicants must list each site in order of preference.
The application form includes the opportunity to identify preferred training streams for the preferenced place of employment.

Referees
Applicants will be required to nominate three (3) referees through the online application process.
Referees are expected to be at consultant level or Senior Registrar with 4 > years’ experience post general registration:
- one from the applicants current or most recent employer
- one from the past 12 months
- one may be the applicant's choice.
It is the applicant's responsibility to ensure the nominated referees are available and are willing to provide the report.
Referees will need to respond to all questions relating to clinical practice, professionalism, leadership, interpersonal skills and will also have the opportunity to provide general comments.
Selection
Appointment to Resident Medical Officer roles within Department of Health are assessed for suitability based on merit.
The assessment shall focus on the candidates' capacity to achieve outcomes related to the duties and shall be the primary consideration when making a decision.
Assessment Process
The assessment methods used by Department of Health include but are not limited to:
- Review of application
- Review of referee reports
- Interview
First round offers will be made as soon as possible, followed by additional round offers as required.
Applicants in receipt of an offer will have seven working days to accept or decline an offer made to work in Tasmania.
Applicants who are deemed not appointable will be advised of the outcome at the completion of the assessment process so they may pursue other opportunities.
Pre-Employment
Successful applicants will need to hold General, Provisional or Limited Registration with the Medical Board of Australia (AHPRA) prior to commencement of employment.
Successful applicants must satisfy a pre-employment check before taking up the appointment. The following checks are to be conducted:
1. Conviction checks in the following areas:
- crimes of violence
- sex related offences
- serious drug offences
- crimes involving dishonesty
2. Identification check
3. Disciplinary action in previous employment check
Successful applicants who are not Australian Citizens or do not hold permanent resident status will need to obtain an appropriate work visa in order to undertake paid employment in Australia. Medical Recruitment Staff will provide assistance if required.
Starting Work
The Resident Medical Officer year commences on Monday 15 January 2024.
