Driving with lower limb amputation

Driving with lower limb amputation

Driving can be an important part of daily life. Major limb loss impacts on your ability to drive.

In Tasmania, you are legally responsible to notify the Registrar of Motor Vehicles of all health conditions that affect your ability to drive safely. The Rehabilitation Team can assist you with this if needed.

For most people, the process of returning to driving begins, when they are confident and safe to walk outside.

The THS brochure “Driving after major lower limb amputation” contains important information, including legal requirements. These include:

  • Notifying the Registrar of Motor Vehicles (Tasmanian Government)
  • When and how to begin the process of returning to drive
  • Medical Fitness to Drive Assessment
  • Occupational Therapy Driving Assessment
  • What happens if you ignore medical advice?
  • Other transport options
