Local Government Area Profiles

In 2009, the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) produced a series of 29 Local Government Area Profiles for public release.  These profiles provide DHHS service data, demographic data, socio-economic data and selected health and human services data by local government area.  They are intended to provide information to the public on these aspects of each local government area so people can make more informed health and wellbeing choices.

Demographic data provided includes population distribution by age cohorts, total estimated population, Indigenous population, population projections and family composition.  Socio-economic factors covered include Socio-Economic Indexes for Area, tenure of dwellings, income and expenditure on housing, selected income support payments and unemployment rates.  Selected health and human services data includes public hospital separation rates by age cohorts and by specialised service related group, GPs per 100 000 population, ambulance cases, Mental Health Services client numbers, Aged Care Assessment Placements, Home and Community Care services, mothers and babies attending six week nurse health assessments and public housing proportions.  Socio-demographic data is presented alongside services data to give an indication of service needs and demands.

In addition, a Tasmanian profile has also been developed to provide a means of comparison for Local Government Area data.

In order to present a perspective of DHHS actions which have taken place since the data was collected, Building Better Communities, a Companion Document to the DHHS Service and Community Profiles has also been developed.
