The Check In TAS app is a new Tasmanian Government system that is now available to help venues and patrons/visitors record and store contact details.

The app enables patrons/visitors to check-in to businesses, venues and events and have their data stored securely with the Tasmanian Department of Health in the event contact tracing is needed due to a confirmed case of COVID-19 in the community.

The app also supports venues operators and event organisers meet the current Public Health requirement to record contact details of individuals or one member of a group of patrons/visitors who spend more than 15 minutes on the premises.

The free app is now available for individuals to download via both the Google Play Store and Apple App Store

Businesses can register for the Check in TAS app via the online form

Although a range of methods are available for venues and patrons to record details of their visits to hospitality venues, the Check In TAS app will enable the Department of Health to store the contact details for 28 days before they are automatically destroyed.

How to use the Check in Tas app

Step one download the app and register your details

  1. Download the ‘Check in TAS’ app to your mobile phone. It can be found on the Google Play Store and Apple Store.
  2. Register your contact details. You only need to do this once.

When you get to a venues or event location

  1. As you enter a venue or event location you will see large posters at each of the entrances. These display the unique QR code for that particular premises.
  2. Open the ‘Check in TAS’ app on your phone
  3. Select ‘Check in Now’
  4. Hold your phone over the QR code so the app can read the code
  5. Add in any additional people that are in your group
  6. When the check-in is complete, show venue staff the successful check in screen.

The second screen of the app has the words, 'check in TAS', your name, your mobile and your email, and then the words, 'check in now'. On the top left of the screen are three small lines which denotes a menu list.  A green tick is on the screen. The words say 'Thanks John, you've checked in at (the name of venue). At the bottom, the words say Tank you for supporting COVID-19 contact tracing efforts and doing your bit to keep Tasmanians  safe.

FAQs for customers

What is QR code?

  • A QR code is like a barcode that can be read by a smartphone camera. A QR code consists of black and white squares, typically used for storing URLs or other information for reading by the camera on a smartphone. The Check in TAS app gives you the option of allowing your smartphone’s camera to scan the QR code when checking in. Alternatively, you can choose to manually enter the six-digit number, which is located next to the QR code on the venue QR code poster.

What happens to my information?

  • The data collected goes directly to the Tasmanian Department of Health's secure AZURE cloud and will only be accessed by authorised Department of Health staff involved in contact tracing, if required.
  • After 28 days your data is automatically deleted.

What if I don't want to use the app?

  • Use of the app is optional. You can still provide your contact information by other means at venues.

Should I still use the COVIDSafe App?

  • Yes.  The Check in TAS app compliments the COVIDSafe app.  The Check in TAS app is specific for customers to check in to a specific venue and have their details stored on the Tasmanian Department of Health's secure AZURE cloud and will only be accessed by authorised Department of Health staff involved in contact tracing, if required.
  • The COVID Safe app has a broader use and is not venue based. It is for use in other locations such as open spaces, parks and public transport.

Can I check in other people attending a business or venue with me?

  • The Check in TAS app provides you with the ability to check in multiple people at the same time. For example, if you were to attend a café with your family members (who don’t have devices), you could register yourself on your device and list additional people (including children) when checking in.

Is my phone compatible with the Check in TAS app?

  • The Check in TAS app is available on Apple iPhone, iPad and iPad touch operating iOS 10.0 or later. For Android users, the Check in TAS app is available for devices using Android 5+.

Why was an app developed with QR code that links to a website?

  • QR Codes that link to websites and require people to enter their details can be exploited. For example, a malicious user could print off a QR Code that directs a user to enter their details on a site with a similar look and feel.
  • When you use an app, the QR Codes are all recorded in the system. If a user scans a QR Code that isn't validated in the system, they will receive an error message. This will then stop the user from being directed to a website that may be suspect, to provide their contact information.
  • Using a website also allows phishing attacks to occur, with the potential for a malicious QR Code to take the end user to a different website that may be suspect. Using the Check in TAS mobile app minimises the potential for phishing.

What's the cyber security aspects of the app?

  • The data is hosted in Microsoft Azure and has undergone security testing before being made available to the public. The app itself is only available via trusted sources: the Apple App Store, and Google Play Store.

Do I have to use the Check in TAS app to scan a Check in TAS QR code?

    Yes. For security purposes the QR code functionality was built within an app. QR codes on Check in TAS posters will only work when using the app, they will not work by opening your camera to scan.

    Once you have downloaded the app, it’s only a couple of steps to check-in at venues.

    Follow the five-step process to download and use the app:

    Download the Check in TAS App from the Apple App Store, and Google Play Store when it becomes available later this week.

    Register your details (required for the first time only).

    At participating venues, open the app, select ‘Check in Now’ and hover your smartphone over the displayed QR code.

    Add in any additional people – those who are with you without their own device or app.

    When the check-in is complete, show venue staff the app successful check in screen.

Do all QR codes work on Check in TAS app

    No. Only QR codes on Check in TAS posters in participating venues will work in the Check in TAS app.
