Working with Children and Vulnerable People Screening Unit

The Tasmanian Government is committed to supporting and protecting vulnerable people in Tasmania. To this end it will set up a centralised background checking and risk assessment system for those working with vulnerable people to reduce the risk of sexual, physical, emotional or financial harm or neglect.

Such checking systems for people working with children are established or under development in all Australian jurisdictions. Given the similarities in the risk of harm faced by children and vulnerable adults, Tasmania is considering extending the checking system to include people working with vulnerable adults.

The Department of Health and Human Services is proposing to form a Working with Children and Vulnerable People Screening Unit. People wanting to work with vulnerable people in Tasmania will need to apply for registration with the Screening Unit before starting work.

Public comment

We invite Tasmanians to comment on a discussion paper on the proposed checking system.

Public consultation closes 12 March 2010

We aim to release a consultation report in April 2010 and submit a Working with Children and Vulnerable People Policy to the State Government.

It is hoped that legislation will come before the Tasmanian Parliament in late 2010.
